For Those Considering Purchasing Ladies Jodhpurs

By Aaron Schulz

Proper attire improves your riding experience. Ladies jodhpurs and breeches are the accepted trousers for English style riders. This special leg wear was originally developed to help solve problems of discomfort commonly associated with riding in ordinary pants.

The need for special attire covering the legs was recognized at least as far back as the 17th century. By the middle of the 17th century Europeans began wearing form fitted pants that either ended or were tucked under the top of long boots. These were the original breeches. Jodhpurs were originally designed to make polo playing more comfortable. This invention of an Indian maharaja was soon adopted by British officials in the area in the 18th century and the rest is history.

This article of clothing comes in greatest contact with the horse. Loose fitting attire causes rubbing, chafing and also can pinch calves close to the stirrup leathers. This problem is more common with English saddles as they have thin stirrup leathers and not wide straps like a western saddle. Close fitting riding pants leave less room for uncomfortable and sometimes painful chafing of the legs, that is experienced when regular pants are worn.

Jodhpurs are longer than breeches. Their length ends below the ankle bone. They usually have a zipper and are usually made from special stretch material. But, pull on style jodhpurs are gaining in popularity, outside less rule oriented competitive activities. To accommodate movement, reinforcements around the seat and the knee area, incorporating patches, are part of modern constructive improvements.

This style of riding pants pronounce leg position. They make it easier for judges to judge performance and for riders to demonstrate their skill. Young learners are also recommended to use them to develop their correct leg position. Instructors, who are better able to check what a young learner is doing, encourage their use. In making your selection from jodhpurs available on the market, please consider the fabric from which the garment is made.

Popular fabrics are polyester, poly and wool blend, denim blend of cotton and polyester, corduroy, and a cotton and lycra blend. Polyester pants are durable and less expensive. However, the fabric does not breathe or stretch and it is slippery on leather. A poly and wool blend is more expensive, but it is durable and breathes better. However, it also does not stretch. Denim is another inexpensive fabric choice. It does stretch and breathe, but it is not durable. Also, you cannot show in denim. Corduroy can become uncomfortably hot for summer, if one is based in a warm region. Cotton and lycra blends stretch, are durable and breathe. Low rise pants are not allowed for showing. They sit too low on the waist to allow a shirt to be tucked in. In addition, the back of vest does not cover waistband. They are fine for home.

After deciding on your selection, you may look to upgrade knee patch and underpass options. For tighter grips, ultra suede or suede patches will both be helpful. Of the two, ultra suede is easier to manage and costs less than its real alternative. Separate purchase of patches may be required, should you wish to add patches not provided for in your choice selection.

Underpasses are straps that make the pants fit tighter to the boot. They go underneath, hence their name, and hold pants down more closely. Riders dressed in ladies jodhpurs that appear short, may just have the wrong sized underpass. For active riding, it is suggested that buttonholed underpasses might be superior to standard variety.
